As you shop for a new construction home, if you’re looking to live in a more urban area, you may be noticing (and even a bit worried about) tiny closets and nonexistent storage spaces. Townhomes have earned a (sometimes unfair) reputation for less room to store seasonal and sentimental items.

At Rezide Properties, though, we build homes that fit our buyers’ lifestyles, and that means plenty of room for both day-to-day and seasonal storage. If you’re looking to make the most of the storage space in your home, here are a few of our favorite tips to help you stay organized.

How to Maximize the Storage Space in Your Home

The first (and, honestly, most challenging) step to tackling organization or storage is to carefully consider what you want to keep and what you can let go. Make the most of your space by storing only what’s important to you.

Use clear plastic bins. Loose items take up more space than bins. Organize small items into (well labeled) boxes to make the most of your closet or attic space. The same trick works for the pantry, too! And when possible, use clear plastic bins so you can easily see what’s in each container.

Add shelving. Shelves can transform otherwise useless space into prime real estate. Hang shelves that fit your room (and your storage needs) to avoid wasting any extra space. In the closet, consider atwo-tiered hanging system to maximize room for your wardrobe.

Locate items based on how often they’re used. Anything located between knee and shoulder height is going to be easier to access and more top of mind. Use that space for things you reach for more regularly, and store seasonal items on higher or even ground-level shelves.

Doors are wall space, too. And you’d never waste wall space. Use over the door hooks to add more storage in closets and pantries.
